Document Summary

Griffith experiment discovered there was some (cid:498)transforming(cid:499) principle that suggested bacteria can transfer genetic info. He worked with mice by injecting them with pneumonia bacteria that would be deadly to them. There were 4 different conditions: deadly bacteria, non-deadly bacteria, heated deadly bacteria, and heated deadly bacteria/ non-deadly bacteria. They used mice and injected them with heated toxic bacteria and non-toxic bacteria and added either protease (digests proteins) or dnase (denatures proteins) to the samples given to the mice. They found that those with protease (meaning there was no protein left) had died, while those with the dnase had lived, because the dna was broken down. This study concluded that dna was the (cid:498)transforming(cid:499) factor of genetic material in virulent bacteria. Hershey and chase experiment this study confirmed that dna is the genetic material that is inherited, not proteins (as previously thought). They used radioactive isotopes of sulfur to tag the proteins, and phosphorous to tag the dna.
