Document Summary
Relevant to understanding the kind of data we have. Key to analyzing the data and for the exam. We need to know what kind of data we have in order to pick the right statistical test to be used. Nominal: most basic level of measurement, least information, the only property is classification or grouping. Which means that you have nominal data, that data can be classified into groups but that"s all you can do. The only thing generated further is frequency e. g. the number of people in given major. Ordinal: contains the property of classification but adds in order/ magnitude. Not only the grouping but adds in order. It has to be arranged in a hierarchy. For e. g. ratings of a movie, 1-5 stars. People also measure socio-economic status as a ordinal measurement e. g. upper middle class, middle class, lower class. Interval: retains the above two properties and adds the notion of equal intervals.
