Lecture 5 09/17/2010 Body Rhythms and Mental States Overview: Biological Rhythms Rhythms of Sleep Exploring the Dream World Consciousness­Altering Drugs Realms of Sleep Stage 1: Feel self drifting on the edge of consciousness This period of sleep lasts only a brief time (5­10 minutes) If woken, may believe sleep did not occur Stage 2: Minor noises won’t disturb you Lasts ~20 minutes Brain begins to produce bursts of rapid rhythmic brain­wave activity (sleep spindles) Heart rate + breathing slow Stage 3: Breathing and pulse have slowed down Transitional period between light and deep sleep Stage 4: Deep Sleep Lasts ~30 minutes REM: Increased eye movement, loss of muscle tone, dreaming (Stage 5) Dreaming occurs Characterized by eye movement, increased respiration rate, increased brain activity Voluntary muscles become disabled Stage Progression Sleep begins in
