organized, multi-paragraph structure with a brief introduction and conclusion in addition to well-
reasoned and supported body paragraphs that answer all parts of the question, giving specific
examples to support the answer. (100 points)
Possible essays (by chapter) follow:
1. Compare the impact of Spanish, French, & English approaches to colonization on the indigenous
populations of the Americas. Which European colonial power was the most successful in their
relationship with Native Americans? (Hint for an ‘A’: In your answer, be sure to include at least one
specific example of interactions with Native Americans for each European colonial power.)
2. Why were the patterns of settlement in the Chesapeake and New England so different? What forces and
ideas shaped the spatial organization of each region? How can the spatial settlement of the colonies
account for the introduction and growth of slavery in America? (Hint for an ‘A’: In your answer, explain
how the climate, society, and labor system affected the patterns of settlement for each region.)
3. Why did the importance of religion decline throughout the colonies from the 17th to the 18th century?
How did American colonists respond to these changes? (Hint for an ‘A’: In your answer, be sure to
address the influence of new philosophies, church doctrine & social concerns of new generations of
colonists.)
4. Congress’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence confirmed a major shift in the conflict
between the colonies and Britain. Why did the colonies make this decisive break in 1776? (Hint for an
‘A’: In your answer, discuss some of the (Patriots’) arguments for & (Loyalists’) arguments against
independence and explain why this document was so revolutionary.)
