Gender ideology: beliefs about how male and female roles should be socially structured. Encourages us to explore cultural images of men and women. Clothing symbolizes the separaion of men and women. Cultural concepions of gender can change however, importance of personal appearance persists in being over-emphasized for females and under emphasized for males. Gender ideology and the ariicial dichotomy proposed by author: Gender coding in american culture: has transformed from rural, to urban, to industrialized, to modern. As society was transformed, so were its values. By the 1880"s men had a highly restricted dress codes. Gender disincions within fashionable circles were not as strongly marked before the 19 th century as they have become since. Body image: the mental picture one has of his/her body. Factors that inluence body image include personal feelings about body weight, being teased by others when young, posiive sexual experiences, parents" aitudes about body (mostly for females)> Body cathexis: degree of saisfacion with our bodies.
