MET 260 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Occluded Front, Warm Front, Cold Front
Document Summary
Chapter 9: air masses, fronts & mid-latitude cyclones. Be able to identify the source regions of air masses on a map. The source of region is the area where air mass originates, usually flat and uniform composition with light surface winds. Be able to classify air masses by their temperature and humidity criteria: p= polar, t= tropical, a= artic, m= maritime, c= continental. All together you get ca, mp, cp, mt, ct. Be able to define the air masses by their letters only. Be able to explain air mass modification and the two ways it happens. After an air mass forms, it migrates away from its source region due to upper level winds. It modifies the weather in that region, and is also modified by the different surfaces. Be able to describe the cross section of each type of front. Cold front- cold dry stable air replaces warm, moist unstable air.
