Census = collect data for indivs in a population. Feasible alternative to census = take and study a subset of indivs in population. Goal of a statistical study = understand characteristics of population. Describe data through table, graph, averages or percentages. The hard data collected from the study of the sample. Inferential statistics: take results from sample and extend them to population. Distribution: tells what values it takes and how often it takes those values. Note: numerical values can be assigned to categorical data. In this case they cannot be meaningfully divided or added. Variable of classification according to level of measurement. Nominal level: values of the variable name, label, or categorize. Does not allow values to be ranked or ordered. Ordinal level: allows values to be ranked or ordered. Interval level: value of a zero does not mean the absence of the quantity. Ratio level: value of zero means the absence of a quantity.
