Document Summary
The endocrine system is composed of glands that secrete hormones that regulate a large number of bodily functions into the bloodstream. Important hormones: adrenaline responsible for pupil dilation, increased heartbeat, lung inflation, and the halting of digestive processes, oxytocin stimulates functions such as breast milk production. The nervous system is a term used to describe the brain and spinal cord. Cns = physical tissue of brain and spinal cord. Pns = nerves that transmit signals, and is broken down into many important sections (see chart for descriptions) Ct scan = takes a series of x-ray photos in order to construct cross-sectional images of different parts of the brain. Pet scan = uses colors to display the location of radioactive glucose-like radiotracers within the brain. Mri / fmri = uses both magnetic fields and radio waves to generate images of soft tissue within the brain.
