I. Intro to Abnormal Psychology
A. Psychopathology
1. The study of the nature and development of atypical or unusual
behaviors, thoughts and feelings that interfere with adaptive functioning in
a major area of life
a) The disability needs to undermine everyday life things; maintain
social relationships, function at work, school, etc
2. Needs to be a pattern
a) Thought, mood, behavior
b) Example
(1) depression
(a) On average, two weeks solid for clinical depression
+ other symptoms
(b) Inability to separate what’s real or what’s not real
3. Not insanity
a) Insanity is a legal term and has no clinical meaning
(1) It wasn’t helpful in describing in any type of mental illness

(3) It’s actually rarely used as a defense strategy
(a) Rarely used because rarely successful

individual consequences
(ii) No matter what reason, the individual needs
to be liable for their actions
4. Challenges
a) There is nothing black and white about why people do what they
do
b) Tolerance for ambiguity
(1) There are many more shades of grey than black and white
(2) Understanding why we feel and behave as we do is often
difficult to discern.
(a) We must be comfortable with the ability to be
comfortable with tentative, sometimes conflicting
information when dealing with psychopathology
