So what is Normal Aging and how does it differ from Disease?
Normal process that occurs in everyone with the passage of time
abnormal processes that do not occur in everyone (pathological aging)
Types of Diseases
Acute - short-term illnesses often the result of viral or bacterial infections; usually curable or run
their course.
ex. influenza, tuberculosis
Chronic - long-term illnesses developing over time; usually incurable.
ex. cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s.
Characteristics

psychological and social factors are also often contributing causes.

We are repeatedly seeing the top two types of chronic conditions in the US being hypertension
and arthritis.
Hypertension
chronically high blood pressure (systolic and diastolic pressure)
more concerned with diastolic increasing
systolic > 140, diastolic > 90
Causes
kidney abnormality, structural abnormality of aorta, narrowing of certain arteries.
Effects
increases risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.
Treatments
lose weight, exercise, avoid excessive alcohol, stop smoking, manage stress, improve
diet, medication, monitor oral contraceptive use.
Arthritis
1. Osteoarthritis - degenerative joint disease; breakdown of cartilage (part of joint that
cushions ends of bones) causes bones to rub against each other.
Symptoms
pain, stiffness, swelling, loss of movement.
Causes
heredity, obesity, injury to joint, overuse of joints, muscle weakness, nerve injury, and
physiological changes due to aging.
Treatment
Physical and/or occupational therapy, exercise, weight control, joint protection, heat/cold
therapy, medication, surgery.
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis - autoimmune (body attacks itself) disease due to inflammation of
joint lining.
Symptoms
chronic pain, stiffness, weakness, loss of appetite, depression.

abnormal immune system, female hormones, heredity infection.
Treatment
medication, exercise, balancing activity & rest, surgery.
Functional impairment = disability
We can assess disability through 2 types:
Basic Activities of daily living (ADLs) - activities needed to care of oneself.
ex. bathing, eating, clothing oneself.
Instrumental of daily living (IADLs) -activities needed to function independently in life.
Wear and Tear Theory.
ex. housework, shopping, cooking
Occurs in 2 main pathways:
1. consequence of a catastrophic event.
2. gradual and progressively.
5-8% community-dwelling older adults receive help for functional limitations.
~25% have “functional dependency” (could use some help)
