Two contrasts between ancient greece and modern greece: cities spread all over the mediterranean and black sea coasts, not one state, but many city-states, with cities on the coast. Mykonos: right on coast=makes economy better because it is cheaper and more efficient, navy is very important. Sparta: exception, great land power, mountainous, encourages many governmental systems. Better at building and defending walls than attacking them. Minoan civilization 2000-1450bc: language unknown, but it was not greek, origins unknown, blank canvas. Constraints of archeology, but still a lot of made-up info. Females were more prominent than many other societies in the region. Female deities, especially the fertility goddess: peaceful, but still had forts, sea power and weapons. Shows that they were worried about an attack (to some extent) Had a strong navy/proficient at sea travel: luxurious. Snake goddesses shows that women were important in society.
