Statistics- The study of making decisions based on data
Qualitative data- Cannot be numerically measured (Ex. The shape your car is in, how happy you
are, etc.)
Quantitative data- Measured numerically (Ex. Age of your car, how many parties you go to in a
week, etc.)
Types of Data
Nominal Data- Categorical (think about this like nominal=names, or labels)
Ex.
What is your hair color?
A. Brown
B. Blonde
C. Red
D. Gray
E. Other
Where do you live?
A. Colorado
B. Kentucky
C. New Jersey
D. California
E. Indiana
Ordinal Data- Can be ranked but in unsure intervals (like order)
Ex.
How is your pain on a scale from 1-10?
How satisfied are you with your dinner?
A. Very
B. Decently
C. Neutral
D. Not so much
E. Hated it

Interval Data- Numerical rankings where the intervals between numbers are known (One can
calculate lots of different things like central tendency, using mean, median or mode, standard
deviation, etc. However, there is no “absolute zero” and ratios cannot be calculated. The
numbers may only be added and subtracted rather than multiplied or divided)(for example you
cannot say that 20 degrees celsius is twice as hot as 10 degrees celsius)
Ex.
Temperature
Ratio Data- Tells the order, intervals, and absolute zero (best form of data for statistical
analysis- can be divided and multiplied)
Ex.
Height
Weight
