Document Summary

Week 5 neural development: development neurogenesis and environment. Psyc 2012 exam 2 study guide: be able to define the terms ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm, and know which layer forms. Ectoderm: outer layer, forms skin and nervous system. Mesoderm: middle layer, forms muscle, blood and bone. Endoderm: inner layer, forms internal organs (lungs, liver, intestines, etc. : be able to define neural plate, neural tube, and neural crest and know what structures they form. Neural plate: part of the back ectoderm that forms the neural tube and neural crest by folding in on itself. Neural tube: hollow tube of cells that eventually forms the spinal cord and brain. Neural crest: these eventually migrate out and form the peripheral nerves: be able to identify the consequences of defects to any of the tissues from 1 and 2 above. Anencephaly: lack of brain formation as a result of incomplete folding of the neural tube.
