Geography Notes
August 20th 2018:
-Will always provide us with electronic copy of notes or powerpoints
-Will focus on Earth’s five spheres
(biosphere,atmosphere,lithosphere,hydrosphere,cryosphere)
-Will have to buy scantrons (4)
-Does not grade on a curve
-Final is just last section not comprehensive just know like an overview
-Send an Email to Matt or Chad if you are not able to make it to the test before hand.
August 22nd 2018:
Overview of Geography
-we will be studying physical geography (focused on physical world)
-Humans affect the physical landscape
-Geography really is looking at spacial relationships with thing on Earth
-Lithosphere (Overall Landscape of earth and how it has changed)
-Atmosphere (Livable level is 5 to 6 meters thick we live in a thin atmosphere)
-Hydrosphere (Plays a huge role in stabilizing our earth, helps provide life to animals and
plants,
-Biosphere provided a high level oxygen that we have on earth
-Without Lithosphere we wouldn’t have an atmosphere
-They all interact and are affecting each other
-Closed system (They are not really impacted from outside influences)
-Many things are open systems example if earth soil was closed the sun's rays would not
get absorbed
-Equilibrium (see in smaller time frames
****-The earth is always trying to move towards equilibrium and become balanced.
-Scientific method helps us get to the next level of knowledge
-Constant checking a rechecking to make sure everything is good
-All scientist wanna slowly move the process forward when trying to come up with
something new. Process happens over a long amount of time
-Limestone calcium carbonate creates caverns after time and creates sinkholes when
too much pressure is on it
-How we interact with the earth and how it will change in the future is why we study
physical geography
-When studying physical geography we develop scientific testing and come up with
ideas of what happening and then state what happens.
-We use models to find things that change and how they might not change
-Every 26 climate models we have montering they have shown that there is global
warming but they don't agree on how much it will increase
-A lot of the models are based off of past experiences to help predict the future

-We caused a pine beetle problem by when we cut down trees a long time ago to get
timber we planted clumps of similar pine trees which then will get eaten by the pine
beetle. Since those trees are dead then we then have our forest fire problems.
-The biosphere affects the soil on Earth
-We use maps to look at the climate (ex. Greenland,Tundra)
-We used data visualization to see how things will change (ex glaciers)
Dynamical Models (ex temperatures, wind)
-S.I is systeme internationale
Measuring the Earth
-Because our rotation on axis the earth is flat at the pole and bulging at the equator, not
a perfect sphere.
