Be able to describe the role of bulk flow vs diffusion in the movement of oxygen from the environment to the cell, including the fundamental importance of hemoglobin in the process. Bulk flow is associated with breathing of air into the lungs. This is how the body gets its supply of oxygen into the body from the atmosphere. Bulk flow gets the air into the lungs, not actually into the blood though. Diffusion plays a role in using the partial pressures of oxygen in the lungs (100mmhg) to diffuse into pulmonary capillarys (40mmhg). Note that the concentration of oxygen in the blood is different than in the lungs. This is because oxygen is less soluble in water/plasma.
