Angel Chen English 5-30-13 The Effect of Society on a Hero All heroes go on the hero’s journey. A hero has special qualities about them that makes them a hero which they could use to their own desires. Hosseini’s The Kite Runner explores the details of a step a hero must take before he is realized as a true “hero”. Through Amir, Hosseini examines the path that he takes to recognize the challenges and hardships he must face before reaching his goal. By contrast, in Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, there is a lack of heroes in the book and is instead run by men who are known as “phonies”. Salinger focuses on the main character, Holden, who is against the rules of society and instead wants to follow his own path to what is right because he thinks phonies ostracized the rules of the society that he thinks is right because all they care about is money and sex to gain power in society.
