1. Review Chapter 6, which focuses on listening and responding. Identify examples of
ineffective and effective listening and responding on the part of Chris’s mother.
Ineffective communication can do unintentional harm, therefore active listening is very
important. Active listening improves relationships and understanding among people. It tends to
open people up, to get them to say more. By being an active listener you can avoid conflicts
because people become more aware of concerns and don't feel as though they're being ignored.
Ineffective listening can occur when someone doesn’t pay close attention to the details that the
other person is telling them. In this case, when Chris was telling her mother about Brandon she
wasn’t really paying attention to all the good things Chris was telling about Brandon rather she
was more focused on the harm that can come from this relationship. An example of effective
listening, in this case, is when the mother paused and asked Chris to describe Brandon again.
This time she paid attention to details. We can understand that she was paying attention to detail
for she repeated back what Chris said to confirm her understanding and responded according to
that.
2. Chapter 10 stated that proximity and similarities are the two most significant influences
on initial romantic attraction. Does this statement hold true for the online relationship
between Chris and Brandon?
The start of romantic relationships is the best time to get to know each other. You start to like
someone more if you have commonalities. In addition, people are more likely to become friends
or get into a relationship with people who are geographically close. However, in this case, both
Chris and Brandon are geographically dispersed but they can talk to each other whenever they
want. Geographical areas do not affect their relationship. People also tend to get into
relationships with those who are similar to themselves in characteristics such as race, religion,
social class, age, personality, education, and attitude. Throughout the conversation between Chris
and her mom, Chris mentions that she likes Brandon more than any of her other boyfriends
because they are similar in many ways. In conclusion, I think the importance of proximity in
online relationships differs from relationship to relationship. Some might make that a priority
and some might not care. However, I think commonalities play an important role in online
relationships too for people are more likely to associate with people who are similar to
themselves.
3. If Chris and Brandon meet face-to-face, how will communication on their initial date be
different from communication on first dates between people who have not met online?
The first date can be fun and flirty. But it can also be frustrating for when they meet face to face,
you can feel that the person is not right for you. In these situations, people might regret wasting
their time chatting with this particular person. If Brandon and Chris meet, it might be awkward
for them at first for they might have a hard time starting a conversation since they never had a
face to face conversation or it could be the total opposite. I don’t think meeting in person or
online has a big impact on the first date. Most people now meet online and depending on their
personality they can easily start a conversation when they meet in person for they have some
background knowledge of how the person might be. I think people who met in person would
have a hard time communicating on their initial date for they might not know what type of
