Document Summary

A positive correlation (between 0 and +1. 00) indicates a direction relationship. A negative correlation (between 0 and -1. 00) indicates an inverse relationship. As one thing increases, the other decreases: correlation helps us predict but it"s not causation. Neurons transmit messages when stimulated by signals from our senses or when triggered by chemical signals from neighboring neurons. In response, a neuron fires an impulse, called the action potential. An action potential is a neural impulse; a brief electrical charge that travels down an axon. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that cross the synaptic gaps between neurons. When released by the sending neuron, neurotransmitters travel across the synapse and bind to receptor sites on the receiving neuron, thereby influencing whether that neuron will generate a neural impulse: acetylcholine (ach) enables muscle action, learning, and memory. Deficits in ach production in alzheimer"s: endorphins are natural, opiate-like neurotransmitters linked to pain control and to pleasure.
