Document Summary

Art history 101 teaches from 4000bc to 1500ad. We lived in a world without images until 42,000 years ago. We don"t know, but we do know that it makes us humans because of the cognitive ability to make symbols and imagery. Pre-history is defined as the millions of years before the development of writing. Archeology is the study of human history through the recovery of objects. Pre-history is divided into two periods: paleolithic (old stone age): c. 750,000-10,000bc, upper paleolithic: c. 40,000-10,000bc. There are two types of paleo art: parietal: wall/cave art, mibilitary: portable art. Why is it important: the lion human represents the first known figurative art and is also the first known sculpture in the round (a figure that is carved on all sides). It"s made of mammoth ivory, which was a very rare material. The figure is also massively huge for its time period, which means that it held great importance to the people.
