AH 102: Art of East Asia: A Tour of the Course
Important topics:
o Zen
o Calligraphy
o Tea

Descriptions of the 1st painting:
o The image is depicting a bamboo tree
o Seems to have been painted with regular ink on a silk canvas
o The leaves on the tree take on a similar structure to that of the calligraphy written
next to the painting, as if they are one whole painting
o The context of the words written in Chinese Calligraphy probably represent the
bamboo tree in some way
o The calligraphy in the painting is actually a poem
It is a religious poem that is urging the reader to take on the characteristics
of a bamboo tree in order to “purify his/her karma”
Most ancient Chinese art and calligraphy were written and drawn by
Chinese monks who wanted to send religious messages to their peers
o This painting and the assigned calligraphy was produced by a Chinese monk, but
was made in Japan, so it is considered as Japanese art
Course Goals
o Through studying the East Asian arts of tea ceremony, calligraphy, painting,
garden design, and ceramics, students will:
Know the materials, formats, techniques and stylesof these arts
Understand the social, political, and religious functions of East Asian
artistic traditions
Learn the cultural, political, and economic relationships of China, Korea,
and Japan and of East Asia with the West - as shown through the arts
Relate East Asian artistic traditions to contemporary events and to one’s
own experience
Concepts that will be taught for the majority of the semester:
o Calligraphy and painting
o East Asian Garden Design
o Zen Buddhism and the Arts
o Ceramics including Lacquer
o Tea Ceremony, its origins, where it spread, and its purpose
Learning objectives:
o Demonstrate factual knowledge about the role art has played in the development
of East Asian civilizations
Example: what role did Chinese calligraphy play in East Asian Art as well
as in society?
o Demonstrate understanding and appreciation of art as a cultural activity

Reading Assignments:
o Reading assignments and due dates for the semester are listed on the schedule on
the syllabus, which is an online google sheet
o Reading will come from websites, podcasts, journal articles, exhibition
catalogues, and books on reserve.
The “Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History” is one example source where
most of the readings will come from
Participation:
o Attend regularly (2 “free” absences); and be on time
o Complete reading and listening assignments before class
o Complete group work and in-class writing (Marked for completion) 
o 15% of final grade
Journal Entries:
o Deep engagement with course material
o 11 journal entry assignments over the semester and they have to be 250 words
each
o Questions and prompts will be posted on Bb
o Can miss one without penalty
o 10% of final grade
Written Assignments:
o Visual Analysis Assignment; 3 pages, based on a Chinese painting at the
Metropolitan
15% of final grade
Must see object in person prior to the due date of this assignment either on
the Metropolitan trip or at another museum depending upon availability of
the student
