Biomedical model: the viewpoint that illness can be explained based on aberrant somatic processes & that psychological & social processes are largely independent of the disease process; the dominant model in medical practice until recently. Began to change with the rise of modern psychology: conversion hysteria: viewpoint that specific unconscious conflicts can produce physical disturbance symbolic of the repressed conflict, advanced by freud, no longer the dominant view in health psychology. A more important development concerned an emphasis on psychosocial mechanisms: dunbar & alexander maintained that conflicts produce anxiety. The biopsychosocial model maintains that biological, psychological, & social factors are all important determinants of health & illness. Also, useful for clinical practice with patient"s relationship between patient & practitioner. Health psychologists help chronically ill people adjust psychologically & socially to their changing health state & treatment regimes. Nearly every person in the country has direct contact with health care system as a recipient of services.
