Description
Building Relationships: Expectations (not in the book)  Most issues that come up in a relationship have something to do with expectations • We often don’t know or communicate our expectations until they’ve been violated   Problems with expectations • When you’re unaware of them – often can’t control them • When they’re unreasonable – the person who has them, though, doesn’t see them as being  unreasonable  • When they’re unspoken – you can control that – can be difficult for some personalities to handle  • When we have a conflict of expectations, we see the event and think it’s the real issue → The actual issue is a lot more (attitudes, values, communications, feelings, needs, mood,  assumptions, expectations, etc.)   Common Expectation Clashes • Men vs. Women’s roles • Contact with previous partners  • Money – not always about the actual money, but what we attach to the money  • Standards of cleanliness – even if you said “clean”, there are different definitions for everyone  • Time spent together – quantity vs. quality   “Are your expectations realistic?” • How do you know this? • What if you believe
