Document Summary

Know the difference between compliance, conformity, and obedience. Social influence: changes in overt behavior caused by real or imagine pressures from others. Compliance: changing your behavior in a response to a direct request. Conformity: changing your behavior to fit in. Obedience: changing your behavior in response to a demand from an authority figure. Know the asch study: participants were in a group where they viewed lines and were asked which line matched the first line. If everyone gave the right answer then participant said what they actually believed. But because the first 5 people before them gave the wrong answer (confederates) - actual participant gave the wrong answer as well. Modifications discussed for this experiment: having a partner, writing the answer on a piece of paper. People conformed because they didn"t want to stand out, wanted to seem unanimous, and they thought they were wrong: know the milgram study: this is the shock experiment with the authority figure.
