L’Ancien Regime: 15th 18th century
- French for The Old Regime
States during the Old Regime were nebulous
- Government was localized
- States were more of a collection of land than a united front
Holy Roman Empire: collection of 300 smaller states
- Prussian and Austrian Empires combined
o Don’t actually work together, just technically together
- Remnants of the Roman Empire
Characteristics of an 18th century state:
1. Absolutism
a. Monarchy has absolute rule based on the divine
i. God chose them to rule
ii. Subjects did not question the leaders rule because of this
b. No accountability
i. Because they’re chosen by God, the ruler is only held accountable to God
ii. Allows for complete use of power
c. Curtailed the power of the Church, feudal lords, customs, etc.
2. Mercantilism
a. State controls the economy
i. Can add tariffs, etc.
3. Big bureaucracies
