Another defining event of the twenty-first century would be the sanctions placed on iraq. The issue essentially began in 1991, when iraq successfully invaded kuwait and took over. United nations, however, declared these actions illegal and forcefully removed iraq from this land. As a result, the un placed iraq under strict import and export embargoes until iraq agreed to meet the list of demands given to them by the security council. Although this issue did not originate in the twenty-first century, the sanctions lasted over thirteen years - into the twenty-first century. This example is also not an anomaly, and shows just one example of a repeated part of the twenty-first century. The people of iraq faced serious malnourishment and health issues, became the poorest country in the world, had severe economic decline along with a myriad of other issues. Some have even claimed that the sanctions on iraq, sent them back to the stone age.
