Consider this to be the first part of the final paper.
Submit a reflection paper (2 pages) describing what you think about
information and communication technologies, and how they have changed your
environment. Explain the ICTs you use frequently, and how familiar you are with
new ICTs. Do you think you are tech savvy?
**double spaced, size 12, times new roman!
After the assignment is due, Sky will be posting opportunities for us to go in and
meet with him to discuss our papers, so that he can help us to start molding them
for the final paper.
Can we define Technology?
Nye defines technology in terms of evolution.
He claims that technologies are not foreign to human nature but insperable
to it.
it is easy to imagine human beings are pre-literate, but it is difficult to
imagine they are pre-technological.
o E.g. most native americans did not write. But they developed tools
(tents, drums, bows, ovens)
Two claims come from Nye:
1. the central [modern] purpose of technologies has not been
to provide necessities, such as food and shelter, for humans
had achieved these goals very early in their existence.
Rather, technologies have been used for social evolution.
are we to believe that today?
The other claim:
2. Necessity is often not the mother of invention. In many cases, it
surely has been just the opposite, and invention has been the

mother of necessity. When humans possess a tool, they excel at
finding new uses for it. The tool often exists before the problem
to be solved.
Ancient Greeks used the term techne that meant skill in arts
Romans valued technology more. Roman poets praised the attempts to create
a second nature
The term technology emerged in English language (borrowed from latin)
mainly reffered to study of one of the arts (e.g. glassmaking)
Before the 5s, people used terms such as mechanic arts, useful arts,
invention or science to refer to what we mean by technology today.
Technology is a slippery term.
It may be:
o An object
o A process
o Cause and effect
o In the s, people started using the term technology as a
synonym for computers, telephones, and other related devices.
Telecommunication
telecommunications is more than a set of technologies… its more than an
enormous global industry…, its more than twenty-first century business law that is
being re-created to accommodate a virtual world, and its more than a creator and
destroyer of the state of the economy.
telecommunications is a way of life. – Goleniewsky
Henry Ford and his colleagues created the assembly line and other techniques of
mass production in the formative days of the automobile industry and enjoyed a
significant advantage over their competitors for nearly  years.
knowing how to run an assembly line no longer conferred a competitive advantage,
because everyone knew how to do it.
according to Carr, knowing how to use information…
the hardware equipment, organizational structures, and social values by which
individuals collect, process, and exchange information with other individuals. –
Rogers
