CHE 220 – Elementary Organic Chemistry – Study Tips
1) More preparation before class = more engaged in class. COME TO CLASS PREPARED!
2) Work incrementally; slow and steady wins the race. DO NOT CRAM BEFORE THE EXAM!
3) Read Chapter, work In-Chapter problems, and possibly discuss with study partner before class.
4) Review previous lecture notes before class and rewrite notes immediately after class.
5) Make flashcards for certain items (i.e. Functional Groups), but avoid ONLY rote memorization.
6) Use the textbook as a continual reference to reinforce understanding of lecture notes.
7) Work assigned End-Chapter problems: NOT effective until steps 1-6 are accomplished.
8) Review End-Chapter problems and practice exam with study partner(s).
9) Review concepts progressively and again before the exam; test yourself over and over.
10) COME TO OFFICE HOURS EARLY AND OFTEN!!! YOU MUST UNDERSTAND NOTES!!!

Recover love of learning; avoid time vacuums
Learn the Golden Rules (Iverson); always be drawing
Be realistic (“something must give”); study at least 12 h per week
Study quietly and alone first; study in groups later
Speak the language of O-Chem; visualize molecules in 3-D (model kit)

TAs for CHE 220, 231, and 233 are required to hold office hours for all students in CHE 220, 230, and
233, so visit them in the Chemistry Resource Room (next to the Chemistry Office in Julian Hall) as
needed. Come to review sessions and office hours as listed in the syllabus or by appointment.
