Document Summary

The revolutionary war itself was a fight against a strong centralized british government. Between 1750 and 1850, there were at least 20 uprisings by colonists who emptied jails, burned public buildings, closed court systems, and organized their own government institutions. In 1786, almost 9000 took part in an uprising, shay"s rebellion, against government-approved lending practices. How were catholics treated in early america: rumors were spread that guns were hidden under the altars of catholic churches, to be used against protestants. A series of novels described the secrets of life in a convent, including the rape of girls by priests, torture, starvation, and sexual cruelty. For several decades, catholic churches were vandalized, burned, and bombed. Some protestants linked catholics as a sign that armageddon was near and sermons linking the pope to the devil. Who were the know-nothings? : a political party that had a platform that was explicitly anti-immigrant, including a provision that no catholic could hold any public office.
