Psychology- the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Behavior refers to observable actions (such as hitting someone or a change in heart rate. ) Mental refers to internal experiences (such as thinking or feeling. ) Scientific method- a set of rules that helps us draw accurate conclusions. The first systematic explanations for behavior came from greek philosophers such as aristotle (384-322 b. c. ) Aristotle suggested that differences in behaviors were the results of differences in experiences. Hippocrates (460-377 b. c. ) thought differences in behavior were caused by differing levels of body fluids called humors or biles. Example: physiologists thought depressed people had high levels of black bile. The difference between a philosopher and a physiologist. Philosophers relied on logic to develop their explanations. Physiologists used observations and experiments to develop their explanations. Wilhelm wundt, university of leipzig, germany (1832-1920) brought philosophers and physiologists together to work on a common set of problems. This established psychology and its first laboratory.
