Chapter 3b: Structure and Function of Cells Nucleus - Functions: contains genetic information for and controls the cell - Structural Features: o Double-layer nuclear membrane o Nuclear pores o Chromosomes/chromatin (DNA, start and stop codes for each protein) o Nucleolus (“little nucleus”—specialized bit of genetic info that codes for a ribosome which will synthesize proteins Ribosomes - Site of protein synthesis - Location: o Free: floating/cytoplasm o Bound: attached to outer surface of endoplasmic reticulum Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) - Actually continues toward outside of the cell so it connects to the ER of another cell - Two types: o Rough ER: has ribosomes on surface ▪ Manufactures and modifies proteins o Smooth ER: no ribosomes on surface ▪ Synthesizes lipids and packages proteins Golgi Apparatus - Refines synthesized products
