Document Summary

Chapter 1: introduction to physical anthropology and prehistory. Principle of fixity of species - species were unchangeable after their creation. Theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics (theory of use and disuse) Needs are met by modi cation or by production of new organs. Continued use of an organ needs to increase in size and functional capacity; lack of use of an organ leads to its degeneration and loss. Changes to organs that occur during ones lifetime are inherited and passed to ones offspring. Theory of catastrophism - in the past, there were a series of sudden, violent, climatic, and geological upheavals that led to the extinction of species in the affected region. After the cataclysmic event subsided, species from neighboring area migrated into the region. These immigrant species were similar in appearance, but not identical to the species that were extinct.
