Midterm Question Responses
Question # 5: What are the names of the two main locations in Wuthering Heights? What do
different spaces represent? How are the two main locations different? Compare and contrast the
two places.
The two main locations in the novel Wuthering Heights are the estates of Wuthering
Heights and Thrushcross Grange. You can compare these two locations to each other almost like
comparing apples to oranges, ice to fire, or the calm to a thunderstorm, in short terms. These two
distinct locations were the houses of two wealthy, yet completely opposite families whose
children had opposite upbringings and values. Wuthering Heights, home of the Earnshaws and
Heathcliff, was the location you could refer to as the “fire” or “storm” since the house held a
more negative ambience. Within the novel Emily Bronte distinctly depicts the estate in an eerie
fashion describing the winds that boom and drop at the top of the hill and wild storms through
the night. In contrast, Thrushcross Grange was a lovely, elegant estate situated within large,
green park filled with gardens and trees. This estate was home to the Linton family who were
richer and more sophisticated than the Earnshaws at Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff himself even
described the Linton’s home as a beautiful, glorious place and referred to it as heaven (p. 48)
upon his first sight. These two homes serves as two of the novel’s strongest literary symbols and
are highly representative of the respective family’s that live inside of each estate.
