A major cultural shift occurred from 1890 to the 1920"s. Before this time, society was focused on sorority and female bonding. But this changed during this time because of dr. sigmund freud ideas. Freud published three essays on the theory of sexuality which cause freud"s followers to look more into same sex relationships. Because of this, homophobia started to take root in society because no one wanted to be thought of as gay. a marriage before this time would have been a couple that loves each other and shares their life. After this time period, people thought more of companionate marriages where your husband would become your best friend.
