90% of all the media you consume (ex. music, media, gaming) is controlled by 6 companies: general electric, news. They want diversification, chances at making profits in all of these different areas. Conglomeration combination of vertical & horizontal integration; new twist on vert. & hor. integration (the big 6 exists b/c of this strategy); large companies that own lots of small & large businesses but they"re very different types of businesses. Conglomeration leads to consolidation of ownership (power) ex. Disney owning all the major sports networks (nba, espn, nascar, nfl) saves money because it"s all the same content; you can put your espn adds on your nfl sites; it"s all under 1 umbrella. This is a process that isn"t static (this is constantly happening) Consolidation of power is constantly happening; all of these companies are constantly looking for more companies to buy so that there are fewer ones out there on their own.
