Meditations
Chief issues of philosophy are god and the soul
-Writes to demonstrate to the nonbelievers
Atheists say god isnt real bc he is cast in humanlike ways so means we made him up
Relationship between presentation and content/substance
Presentation-Meditation/A narration in your own mind/focus on your own
thoughts; focus on what is real or what is doubtful
(e is gods lawyer:
Presenting a case for God being real against a jury of the world
Meditation 1:
Throughout my past I have believed every story people have told
-I have to go back and change all opinions so I can find a real foundation to
build things up if I want to make anything lasting in philosophy
His method to destroy the opinions is by the method of doubt
-Gives criteria for truth; beyond all doubt
-Go through all opinions and if you can doubt them, then demolish them.
He withdraws himself from the world, into solitude and just his thoughts
Anything the senses have given you can be doubtful bc they can be deceiving.
Things that are quantifiable seem to be indubitable
-Size, shape, numbers, etc.
Is it possible that instead of a god there could be an evil demon that for your whole
life is deceiving you into thinking things are true; like maybe + doesnt really
equal . Couldnt that creature fool you? )ts certainly possible; but improbable
I had all this competence in the world and my senses, but now that I have thought of
the evil creature, ) just dont know if anything is true.
Wants to go back to way he was before he thought of it.
Nothing is certain

Meditation 2: The mind is better known than the body
)m in a whirlpool
) cant find a foundation for anything to be certain
The thing that I can figure is beyond doubt is that I Exist
Cogito-Latin for ) think
-The entire world is dubious; the only thing certain is cogito
-Dont even know if the body exists; but cogito does
) used to think ) was a rational animal
-Goes back into the past he already demolished
-He fleshes himself back out, only to strip himself down again
Body is extended, but the mind is clear/distinct; it is certain
Confused/Obscure
Vs.
Clear/Distinct
-Only inside the mind
But what exactly is cogito?
-A set of faculties
-Abilities of the cogito; ways it can operate
It is an indubitable thinking thing that can do things
-EX: sense, imagine, understand, affirm/deny, etc.
Imagining=images come into your mind
Understanding=/, images dont come into your mind
Wax
-Cold, hard, smells like honey & flowers
Melts it
-Hot, liquid, no smell
Means qualities arent definite.
)ts your judgment saying it is the same wax
-If just your senses were determining, it would be separate groups of qualities
When you think you are sensing or imagining things, you perceive it through the
mind
-The mind gives the definite of things
-Even bodies are perceived through the mind alone, not by being touched, etc.
