The fam is considered an institution bc it is an area of social life that is organized into discernible patterns and bc it helps to meet crucial societal needs. Fams don"t exist in isolation; they are an interdependent unit of the larger society. The nontraditional definition suggests a broader & more comprehensive portrayal of intimate relationships that often fall outside of fixed legal boundaries. Nuclear families consist of any two or more persons related to one another by blood, marriage, or adoption who share a common residence. Extended fams: includes multiple nuclear fams and relatives like grandparents, aunts, uncles, people-in-law *modified extended family structure: individual nuclear fams retain considerable autonomy yet maintain connections w/ other nuclear fams in the extended fam structure. Orientation: the nuclear fam into which one was born and reared. Monogamy: marriage of one man to one woman.
