3. The following problems will be done in class:
a) A student was hired to stand near the spice section of a supermarket from 5:00 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m. on a particular day to count the number of people who bought spices and to
make special note of the number of people who bought cinnamon or pepper. The
student reported that 60 people bought a spice of some kind, 50 bought cinnamon, 40
bought pepper, and 16 bought both cinnamon and pepper. Should you believe the
student? Why or why not?
b) Thirty seniors at a state university were asked about their reading proficiency in French and
German. Twelve said they could read French, five said they could read German, and two said
they could read both of these languages. Draw and label a Venn Diagram for this problem.
