BIO 131 - Lecture #2 !
Science and The Scientific Method
Science - making sense of the natural world around us !
Terms commonly used in science:!
Fact: something known to be true… BUT is there such a thing?!
-a fact is something believed to be true through observation and
measurement !
-in science, don't think of a FACT as something that “is” true; think of it as
something that is “probably” true!
-“Facts” in terms of scientific thinking:!
a “fact” is something that is believed to be true through observation
and measurement !
we tend to believe in things and our senses but what if they lie !
-for {example} - something can look blue to one person but orange
to another; who’s “fact” is actually right?!
-always subject to questioning and change !
-Do the following statements represent facts?:!
the shape of the earth is nearly spherical !
-yes, but people in earlier centuries believed that for a “fact” the earth
was flat (this is an example of how things/facts change over time) !
the chemical formula for water is H2O!
-we are convinced that a water molecule is H2O but we haven't actually
seen a water molecule ! ! !
Hypothesis: an educated guess or working assumption of something !
-only useful if its testable !
-idea about how something might work or a possible explanation for
something; an answer to any question about anything ! !
