LA 231 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Glacial Landform, Till, Universal Design
LA 200 Midterm Study Guide
What is LA? By, Karen Russcher
What types of spaces and places LAs design: parks, campuses, gardens
Know overall concepts and definitions
LA: Analysis, Planning, Design Management of the natural and built environment
Differentiate restoration versus preservation and identify examples.
How do you design?
What is good design?
What do we mean by materials, what are some, and why is important to consider
them?
The natural and built elements of the project are placed to direct the flow of traffic and are
selected to complement the surroundings without impeding any of the other aspects of good
design.
Universal access: The site is easily accessible to all persons, including those with disabilities
and the elderly. A common form of making a site accessible is adding a ramp in addition to or
instead of stairs
Geomorphology Process, by Trish Machemer
Processes that contribute to Topography and examples of each: Study of the shape
and features of the earth’s surface. Could also be other astronomical body’s surface (moon,
planets)
-climatic (greenhouse effect), hydrologic (lakes, oceans, rivers, ice), biologic (living things), and
geologic (tectonic shift) processes
Hydrologic cycle: water cycle
Depositional Glacial landforms:
Diamictrons (glacial tills)-unsorted glacial sediment
Glacial outwash-sand and gravel deposited by running water from the melting ice of a
glacier
Drumlins-a low oval mound or small hill, typically one of a group, consisting of
compacted boulder clay molded by past glacial action.
Moraines-a mass of rocks and sediment carried down and deposited by a glacier,
typically as ridges at its edges or extremity.
