Document Summary

Chiasma: crossover complex that results from synapsis and holds the homologous pairs of chromosomes together. Chapter 16- mendel: relate the e(cid:448)e(cid:374)ts of (cid:373)eiosis to me(cid:374)del"s t(cid:449)o (cid:862)la(cid:449)s(cid:863), first law: (the principle of segregation) the two members of a gene pair (alleles) segregate from each other in the formation of gametes. Half of the gametes carry one allele and the other half carry the other. Occurs in meiosis 1 during segregation, when homologous pairs of chromosomes separate at the metaphase plate: second law (the principle of intendent assortment): genes for different traits assort independently of one another in the formation of gametes. Occurs in meiosis 1 when the chromosomes align randomly, so the arrangements of gametes are also random: be able to show the gametes produced (and their relative ratios) by a dihybrid like aabb. If the unknown genotype is gg, all offspring will be gg (with the dominant trait).
