Document Summary

C8h8o3: at the end of part a we thought that some substances smell stronger than others. We found that it was easier to identify smells when you can make connections with things that you have already smelled before. Smells get to your nose because of the gas particles that a substance emits. We thought this because methyl butyrate and isovaleric acid have the same chemical formula, but smell completely different. Methyl butyrate smells fruity, but isovaleric acid smells like manure, therefore there is no connection between the chemical formula of a substance and the smell of a substance. We also observed that r-carvone, l- menthone, and s-carvone all smelled minty. They all end in -one: at the end of part c we saw that chemicals with similar structures tend to smell similar to each other. Looking at the structures in part c supported our idea that the minty substances were very similar in composition.
