Document Summary

Which molecule is considered the backbone molecule for lots of molecules found in nature (starting material) Which carbons contain the double bonds for isoprene. Find the longest continous carbon chain which contains the double (alkene) or triple bond (alkyne) Number the chain so that the double or triple bond on the main chain has the smallest number possible. Only use one number to indicate where the bond starts. When more than one double or triple bond is present in the molecule, name it with the suffix diene, triene etc. Name alkyl groups as in the rules for alkanes. Cyclic compounds containing double bonds are called cyclo- (prefix for the number of carbons) ending in ene or yne. When naming molecules make sure to number each bond. Geometric isomers when there are two different groups or atoms on each of the carbon atoms attached by the double bond.
