Intentional or accidental transmission of information through verbal or nonverbal actions. Ex. conversation with friend, hug to tell someone you love them, text message. One person communication with an audience of two or more people. Usually has a leader and is more public than interpersonal. Individual or institution uses technology to reach to a large, mixed population. Sender is not known, separated by time. Speaker giving information won"t see audiences" reaction. Idea that passive audience members consume whatever they see. Media as something we do with others. Ex. listening to radio show before bed, christmas marathon on abc, tv at dinner. Media tells you what to be thinking about, not what to do. Ex. watch a scary movie -> in a bad mood. People"s understanding of the media and how it affects us.
