Most homicide in us are committed with firearms, especially handguns(nij) Homicides committed with firearms peaked in 1993 at 17,075. Many juveniles and young adults can easily obtain gins illegally ; most claim to carry them for self defense. A study of persons arrested for a wide range of crimes showed that a higher percentage of arrestees than regular citizens own firearms. Surveys of offenders found they prefer newer, high quality guns and may steal or borrow them. Most acquire guns off the street through illicit gun market. Who is most affected by gun violence? (nij) People between age 15 and 24 are most likely to be targeted by gun violence than other forms of violence. 3/4 of homicide victims ages 15-17 died from gun related injuries over a 30 year period. Teens and young adults are more likely than persons of other ages to be murdered with a gun.
