Document Summary
Uniquely human capacity to reflect: on oneself, on the world, on the future. Ability to think makes us free: allow us to deal meanings, we (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t thi(cid:374)k outside our o(cid:449)(cid:374) k(cid:374)o(cid:449)ledge stru(cid:272)tures. Constructive alternativism: alternative scientific constructs that each provide a useful view of the world. Humans construe events (understand events in our own way) Predict events (sets humans apart from other animals) Personal constructs: ideas or categories used by persons to interpret the world. Some are universal while others are highly idiosyncratic. Used automatically once the construct is formed. Events are anticipated by observing pattern regularities. Must have 3 elements in forming a construct: similarity pole: 2 aspects that are perceived to be similar to each other, contrast pole: third aspect perceived as different from the above two. We develop theories, test hypotheses, and weigh evidence. Humans reveal aspects of their personality in the constructs they use to describe others.
