Involves use of empirical data, i. e. objective data; grounded in reality rather than personal bias/subjective beliefs. Paradigms and methods for nursing research: paradigm, world view or general perspective of the world"s complexities, key paradigms for nursing research, positivist paradigm: quantitative, real world is driven by natural causes. Research is aimed at understanding the underlying cause of natural phenomena: constructivist paradigm: qualitative, subjective looking at the whole person. They believe that reality is not fixed but rather a construction of the people participating in the research. Types of research: quantitative research, qualitative research, triangulation/mixed methods. Identification and description: exploration, explanation, prediction and control, therapy, treatment, or intervention, diagnosis and assessment, prognosis, etiology (causation) and harm, meaning and process.
