Document Summary
Balance between antagonistic hormones (like a seesaw: 2 hormones act in opposite ways. Pituitary gland is even smaller (size of a pea: two glands in one. As the mouth develops, there is an outpocketing that becomes the anterior pituitary gland. Developed from the brain: 2 separate origins in the embryo for these structures. They are stuck together (but are really 2 separate glands: the master gland of the body because of the large number of hormones it produces/stores/releases. Produces hor mones that are transported down axons into the posterior pituitary. Hormones stored there, then r eleased into the blood. Just stores and release hormones that has been produced by the hypothalamus. Oxytocin: all of us produce some oxytocin (even males, uterus stimulates contraction (during child birth) Reproduction in females: mammary glands stimulates milk release. Causes smooth muscles that surround milk-producing glands to contract (does not stimulate milk production)
