April 29, 2009 nature of politics - section 4. Theories written by white men excludes women. Both focus on political participation only men participate in the public sphere. Not gender neutral as they appear to be. Plato: family = economic base for civic sphere; women private sphere. Rousseau: family = locus of attention, support (ex. Political participation requires a lot of time and effort for men and in order to dedicate to it, there needs to be the woman at home, taking care of the household. Women and men educated differently to fulfill different roles in society. All are autonomous individuals capable of making decisions in civic sphere. Make women and men much freer than before. Free and equal citizens; citizens = males. Sexual contract established at same time, they work together. Women = dominated; private sphere; unequal rights (q14) Orientalism: orient body of texts, etc. Doesn"t take into account the perspective of people in the region.
