Document Summary
Chapter 2: the nature of cancer: know a basic definition of cancer, how cancers are classified, the cells they originate from, and the gradations between normal and cancer cells. Cancer- all cells are plastic in that they contain the entire genome for directions, and most can grow and divide; these cells can reactive genes that harm cell function and division. Cells that have lost the ability to assemble and create tissue of normal form and function form tumors. Tumors are classified by tissue of origin and degree of aggressive growth. Metastasis is the spread of tumors to other areas, and is the cause of 90% of cancer deaths. All cells in a tumor derive from a single deranged cell that goes through mutations over generations. Hyperplastic- more cells than there should be, but they look normal. Neoplastic- disorganized growth and net increase in number of dividing cells.
