Compare and contrast the three types of research. Know what information is provided by each type and the sorts of conclusions that can be drawn. Show the manipulation of x (independent variable) and & (dependent variable) Disadvantages: impractical, unethical, may not reflect natural behavior. Advantages: use when experimentation is impractical or unethical, can show theory driven associations, justify experimentation and provide evidence contrary to theory. The goal is to have systematic bias free observations. Examples can include interviews (focus groups) or behavioral observations. Advantages: idiographic information that can be gathered in the natural environment. Disadvantages: cannot show causal relationships, highly subjective analysis and interpretations, low generalizability. Know the definitions of personality from the perspective of the author, first lecture, and allport. Allport: the dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his. Patterns (environment and biology) characteristic behavior and thought. Determined = structured by past and future. Heritability coefficients relate to only 10% of the shared variance.
